Want to compete? Students who have reached the required belt level can register for upcoming tournaments through the school office.
Every belt represents a milestone in a karateka's journey. Students progress through the coloured belts (Kyu grades) before attempting the coveted black belt (Dan grade).
The beginning. Basic stances, punches, blocks and dojo etiquette.
First light of knowledge. Basic kicks, combinations and first kata.
Growing strength. Improved stances, Heian kata and basic sparring drills.
Growth of skill. Stronger techniques, more advanced kata and controlled kumite.
Reaching higher. Speed, timing and distance control in sparring.
Transition to advanced. Complex combinations and deeper kata understanding.
Maturity and refinement. Advanced kata, free sparring and preparation for black belt.

Time requirements are indicative and follow the guidelines of the affiliated federation.
Attend classes regularly and complete the minimum training period for your current belt.
Your instructor assesses your readiness and recommends you for the grading examination.
Demonstrate kihon (basics), kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) before a panel of examiners.
Successful candidates receive a new belt and a recognised certificate from the federation.
Belt grading examinations are held approximately every 3 to 4 months at IKS.
